Why Was Davron and Darvocet Recalled?

Darvocet and Darvon are brand-name medications made with propoxyphene, a powerful pain reliever. On November 19, 2010, the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) issued a Safety Communication. The FDA recommended against continued use of propoxyphene.

Data has shown that the medication could result in serious toxicity to the heart. Therefore, the FDA recommended that drug manufacturers remove propoxyphene medications from the market. Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals, Inc. manufactured Darvocet and Darvon through 2010. At the time of the recall, it is estimated that over 10 million people were taking medications containing propoxyphene.

Even though Davron and Darvocet have been recalled and removed from the market for many years, the drug has been on the market since the late 1950s. Because many people took the medications, lawsuits were filed even after the recall as people continued to experience adverse effects from the dangerous drugs.

Side Effects and Adverse Conditions Associated With Davron and Darvocet

Propoxyphene, the main ingredient in Davron and Darvocet, is associated with numerous side effects. Side effects associated with propoxyphene include:

  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Convulsions and seizures
  • Unusual thoughts or behavior
  • Confusion
  • Vomiting
  • Yellowing of the eyes or skin (i.e., jaundice)

Research showed that the propoxyphene in Davron and Darvocet could cause heart problems. Even at therapeutic doses, the medication could be toxic to the heart. Electrical activity of the heart, as shown on an electrocardiogram, requires some patients to need a pacemaker.

Conditions associated with Davron and Darvocet include an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, and irregular heartbeat. In some cases, continued use of the medication court results in wrongful deaths.

Types of FDA Classifications or Recalls for Dangerous Drugs and Medications

The FDA uses three classifications for recalls. The classification indicates the seriousness of the problems and the threat to the public. The classifications used by the FDA are:

  • Class I – Exposure to the drug could cause death or serious health problems.
  • Class II – The exposure to the drug may cause health issues that can be treated, or the chances of serious health complications are unlikely.
  • Class III – The exposure to the drug is not likely to cause a serious health problem.

Davron and Darvocet were recalled as Class II. The FDA did not find exposure to propoxyphene represented an immediate threat of serious health risks or death but could be a detriment to the patient’s health.

Suing Drug Manufacturers for Damages Caused by a Defective Drug

All medications have the potential to cause side effects. Drug manufacturers are required to disclose the potential side effects and risks. They can be liable for damages if they fail to disclose the information. Likewise, if manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies try to conceal known problems with drugs, they can be sued for damages.

If a medication causes you to be injured or develop a health condition, you may be able to recover compensation for economic and non-economic damages. There are deadlines for filing defective drug lawsuits. Contact our attorneys today to discuss your situation and protect your right to sue for a dangerous drug injury.
